Nowadays everyone is trying to board their software projects on the Agile and Continuous trains. Almost every organization is trying to embrace those practices. Sadly, some even if the practices do not apply to the nature of specific software projects. And even on the ones that do apply, many are struggling to embrace the practices, succeed in the methodologies, and reap the benefits that they bring. A few manage to somewhat embrace the practices.

Many of us work for prolonged periods at departments where the performance engineers group together to share their knowledge. These departments have a variety of names: performance competence centers, performance center of expertise, load and performance testing center, or even (God forbid) load testing factory.

At the 2020 virtual PAC I discussed “Should performance testing grow fur or feathers to be saved from extinction?” — you may check the video and slides for more details and interesting historical facts. Basically it was about the past, present and future of performance engineering. Here I will try to summarize it in a more streamlined way. I believe that we see two major industry paradigm shifts: one, more platform/infrastructure-oriented; another, more process-oriented.

In the new normal, high performance and availability of digital services are vital, and so is cutting how much it costs to deliver them. But technology complexity continues to increase: a typical application sits atop of many technology layers such as language runtime, middleware, database, container, and the cloud, each with hundreds of settings interacting in counterintuitive ways. Waste, sub-optimal performance, and overprovisioning are often the norm. But how can we identify the best configuration among billions? Traditional (and manual) trial-and-error has reached its limits...

User experience has become more than essential, particularly when it comes to performance. Mobile users expect a better level of performance from mobile apps as they do from web apps. Furthermore, the mobile user experience is highly impacted by device characteristics and network quality, making it difficult for performance testers to accurately replicate bugs in production conditions with conventional testing tools and approaches.

In today's app economy, the speed at which businesses secure revenue directly correlates to application quality and customer perception, expectation, and delight. The objective of performance testing is to identify and expose the most likely sources of application risk and deliver the actionable insight required to mitigate performance bottlenecks. Accurate interpretation of performance test data informs the tactical and strategic decisions that drive the business and impact revenue, brand, market perception, and the user experience.

You know it; we know it. Evaluating the cost of software requires consideration beyond license fees. In a sea of backlogs and to-dos, making thoughtful decisions generates more work. Let's strike off one more thing on your to-do list by evaluating the critical decision points to select performance testing software.

Blockchain is a digitized, decentralized, openly shared public ledger that is a form of distributed ledger technology (DLT). Because blockchain is based on DLT, it is considered impossible to make amendments, which instills confidence when making high-value or high-risk transactions, with traceability. You will learn about.

Neotys develops NeoLoad, the most automated performance testing platform for enterprise organizations continuously testing from APIs to applications. NeoLoad provides testers and developers with automatic test design and maintenance, the most realistic simulation of user behavior, fast root cause analysis and built-in integrations with the entire SDLC toolchain.

NeoLoad lets you reuse and share test assets and results from functional testing tools to analytics and metrics from APM tools. And NeoLoad supports the full range of mobile, web and packaged applications, like SAP, to cover all testing needs. Continuously schedule, manage and share test resources and results across the organization to ensure application performance.

This is how we do it:

  • Automated API Tests: Design, maintain and run performance tests as code and analyze results within continuous integration pipelines using pre-packaged plugins for CI/CD tools and the NeoLoad API.
  • Code-less Test Design: Create test scripts quickly for large, complex applications using a graphical user interface and skip the complexity of hand coding new and updated tests.
  • Dynamic Infrastructure: Easily set up testing resources as needed and automatically free up resources as tests complete. Use test infrastructure efficiently and improve TCO.
  • Resource Reservation: Reserve load testing infrastructure (licenses, load generators, VUs) by date and duration and guarantee resources are available and dedicated.
  • Bottleneck Identification: Define SLAs based on built-in monitoring metrics. Put pressure on the app and compare SLAs to server-level statistics to determine performance. Automate pass/fail triggers based on SLAs. Contributes to root cause analysis.
  • Automatic Test Updates: Update test scripts faster with automatic test script updates. Update only the part of the test that’s changed and re-use the rest for easy test maintenance.
  • DevOps for All: Collaborate across dev, QA, operations and business teams to define SLAs, share test assets and review results while the test is running or after it completes.
  • Simulate Advanced User Behavior: Simulate many concurrent business processes, from simple to complex in end-to-end application tests. Replicate geographic and mobile network conditions. Scale load tests up to millions of virtual users.

Because enterprises need their applications to work perfectly.
