As a Solution Architect here at xMatters, an Everbridge Company, and through my 30-year career in the IT industry, I’ve seen many frameworks offering bold new ideas. CMMI, ITIL, Prince 2, Agile, Scrum, and most recently, DevOps. These frameworks come and go, offering huge improvements in the way we deliver and manage our IT capabilities, but never lasting long enough to act on those promises.

The perfect incident management checklist doesn’t need to be a fantasy. In fact, it shouldn’t be! The perfect incident management checklist should cover a variety of topics, broken down into bite-size sections so that different team members can claim responsibility for their own sections. We asked our internal and external experts what they think should be included in the perfect incident management checklist and unsurprisingly, we were blown away by some of their response.

Technology companies are at the forefront of innovation, changing the way consumers and the general public interact with their everyday lives. As the late Stan Lee so wisely stated, “with great power comes great responsibility,” and this heightened pressure often leaves little room for error when an issue arises—which happens more often than you’d think.

The link between DevOps and artificial intelligence for operations (AIOps) has only started to become clear within the last few years. Monitoring and alerting has evolved from a "black box approach," where you don't actually know what's happening, into observability, where you have access to data that provides everything you possibly need to know about your IT systems. How does AIOps come into play? AIOps is the practice of applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics to automate and improve IT operations. Since it entered as a formal discipline with Gartner in 2016, IT teams have been trying to figure out how to employ it to make their lives easier.

When was the last time you read a good book? How about the last time you listened to an interesting podcast? For many, the latter is likely the more popular pastime. With routines disrupted and people housebound, podcasts exploded in popularity during the lockdown.

Distributed systems are everywhere. Although many teams don’t think of their applications as distributed systems, if they’re developing using container-based microservices and serverless functions instead of a monolith, they’re creating a distributed system. This change also means that monitoring needs are becoming more complex.

One of the great things about the TV detective Columbo (played so brilliantly by the late Peter Falk) was that he never made a hasty decision based on first impressions or appearances at a crime scene. It didn’t matter how obvious it seemed to be who committed the crime (or how good the frame up), Columbo always dug deeper into motives, opportunities, and methods to uncover who the guilty party really was.
